drivers
I set up the internet connection on linux but then it says i need a driver for it. only problem is i dont know where to get one cause its built into my mobo

Which distro are you using?
I assume your on dialup and you need a driver for your modem or you have a usb broadband modem. Post back the details of your internet setup. |

no i am using an cable cat5 connection but i use AOL. i just dont know what to do

it says an ECS L7VMM2(using AIDA32) i found out that its a realtek ethernet card. i am using Madrake 9.1. i go throught the wizard and it says inernet connecion configuration succesfull. finishing this will automatcli update your system. then i click finish and i still cant get online. and when i start uup the internet and network confiuration panel it sayswait then it shows stuff and it says the is connected to the internet

Try this. Reboot and when the lilo screen comes up hit the Esc key. That will take you to a boot prompt. At the prompt type:
linux noapic and then hit the Enter button. Mandrake will boot up. Try your internet connection and see if it works. If it does, post back. Mdk9.1 had some trouble with certain reatek nics and the above is a workaround. If it works, there is an easy way to change the configuration so you don't have to go through the "Esc" thing every time you boot. If it doesn't then we have to delve further into your network configuration. |

Open a console and run:
$ su {enter root password} # ifconfig eth0 and post the output. Also, do you have more than one nic, eg, an onboard one and a pci nic? |
