how knoppix works?

Can we format cdroms as ext3 for linux?İf we cant format as ext3 then how knoppix works on cdrom?
İs it thanks to the universal format of cdroms?

Data cds in linux are formated with the iso 9600 filesystem, which is a universal standard the all cd drives can read. That's the file system that the knoppix cd uses.
