CRASH installing linux, etc.

Hey

Okay, i'm having a problem installing linux and doing all this partitioning stuff. But, i think i found a solution. It maybe because i don't have enough free space on my computer, i'm not sure. But, i'll explain.

Okay, i got this book for linux and I followed everything it said. So, i defragmented and then i got partition magic. I clicked the install another operating system so that it would make another partition for that os. Then i rebooted and booted into the cd for fedora. It went all right, not until the partition part. It said that there the partition could not be allocated. So, i went through the custom partitioning instead and I tried to make another partition. Then it said i need something like a /root and a problem could have occured because there isn't enough space. Ya, so i went back to windows and before it booted up, the partition magic tried to make the partitions, but it couldn't and i got this error 983 saying that there was too many errors. Then i looked around and i went to help and i found out that i need two partitions one extended partition with FAT and another with FAT 32. So i made those and got lost after that. I decided to try mandrake instead and i booted that up. It went well again, then at the partition part, it didn't work. So i was thinking, it could be a space thing. What do you think? Maybe i did something wrong with partitioning. I'm not so sure. I'd really like to get linux on my comp, i've already tried knoppix, and so i wanna install it hehe. Ya, so thanks for your help if you give any .

I'm slightly confused here. You say you used partition magic, then you restarted and booted the disc. With partition magic, does it not apply the settings the next time you restart the computer? So you would have needed to restart to windows again so partition magic can do its thing then restart to try and install linux?

useing partition magic, remove all partitions except the one for windows, and leave the rest id the disk space as free unallocated and unpartitioned disk space.

you will want at least 10 gig of free disk space for a cull complete install of linux.

boot with the linux cd and it should self install automatically to the free unused disk space and do all the partitioning for you, and at the end it will set up the dual boot.

you did not say how much disk space you have for linux

well i did try it a couple a times, first i just restarted and it did its thing, but then the error came up, so when i read help, i thought they meant that it wouldn't work because i didn't install linux yet.

uhm, i have 44.23 GB free space from my C

sorry if i'm unclear, just ask me any questions if you get confused again. i tend to not be a good explainer, but i try.

I don't know why anything told you, you need a fat and fat 32 partition, unless you are running XP as fat 32 instead of NTFS. Linux uses ext2 or ext3 or reiser partitions. I agree with Bailey. Use partition magic to partition enough just for your windows system and leave the rest unallocated. When you install linux it will find the unallocated space and parition it with what it needs.

Okay, i tried to resize the partition with windows, but whenever i rebooted and the screen comes up, i keep getting that error 983 message that there are too many errors. So, i looked it up and all i found was that someone was able to get it working after they defragged and used scandisk many times. So, i'm going to go do that, but i would like your opinion on this. Thanks.
