Which is good for a server
I have a p3 450mhz/128mb/20gb hdd computer that I want to use as a ftp and counter strike server for both lan and over the internet. Which linux would be best for this? And after installing it how hard is it to setup for my purposes?

Just about any linux will do. Linux is essentially a server utility more than a home user OS. There are also systems that are Unix based such as freeBSD. If you are new to Linux you want to go with one that is user friendly such as Rehat, Fedora, SuSE or Mandrake. I am not sure about the others, but I know when you load RedHat it lists different server utilities that you can choose to include with the operating system. While Those are the friendliest versions, Debian versions and Slackware, along with the Unix versions, though more complicated, are the most stable.

if security is your main concern, use openBSD, freeBSD is a good choice next in line would be your various linux distros.

For a low end machine such as that, try Debian. Its install is minimal and will outperform Red Hat or Mandrake or SuSE or other such distro aimed at dekstop use. If you don't mind having to configure everything Gentoo would work fine too.
Their port system is easy to learn as well and can give you 99% of the stuff you'll want to run. I prefer the BSDs too but Linux emulation with game servers is always a crap shoot, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. |
