i want to install linux. --i need help--

hello, im sure this topic has been brought up before but im totally lost on what to do.

i want to expand my knowledge into alternative OS, so i though linux would be a good place to start, it is popular and stable.

after reading info on the www.linux.org i found there are many types of linux.

so i need help to find a version of linux that is quite simple to use since i have never used it before.

My current OS is windows XP pro which i want to keep.
just have linux to learn on and experiment.

can anyone help?

Mandrake and Redhat are also very user friendly to someone new to linux as well as SuSE.
