I had the same problem trying to install SuSE 9 on my laptop from the DVD, ended up using the cd's instead

How is your DVD and CD st up on your IDE cable? You may have to make the DVD the master device or place it first on your IDE cable. I've found on my system, when I have my DVD and CD-R set on Cable Select, then it doesn't matter whcih one I have the CD, or DVD in when I choose boot from CD first. It just takes whichever one has a media device in it.

Another thing you can try, though I would only go this route if nothing else worked, is write the DVD files to CD, then install. I don't know how well it would work though. Plus it would take you about 7 cd's to do.
