Not sure how to download SuSe linux?

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie to Linux but I want to give it a try so someone recommended SuSe as a good starter. I've found their FTP: //ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/ but I don't know what files to download? I assume version 9 is the one I should get but which files do I need? Also, I think it is at one stage divided into i586 etc. but I don't know which "i" is for me. I'm using an Intel chip if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any help

You need to download their install disc first, after it starts the install you need to tell it which ftp site to go to. For this reason I have always bought SUSE. It's a pain in the butt. They make it difficult so you will go out and just buy it for 39 bucks. Try Fedora core 1, i like it much better.

Okay, I couldn't figure out SuSe so I've decided on getting Fedora instead. I'm nearly finished downloading the first disc now (650mb ISO file). Do I just burn it straight to a CD-RW when it's done or do I have to edit the file or do something first?

Thanks, JTH

P.S. I hope I got the right one. It says i386?

its an iso image file. you need to open (nero or whatever) and go to burn image then select the file and start the burn process.

Yah, you have to burn the iso as an image, well that's what it is anyways... In Nero go to the menu and you'll see make image or something like that. Do that and your home free, have fun!!!

Just burn it.. Sorry to hear you gave up on SuSE. It is one of the best distros around. They offer a live Eval version (get it @ www.linuxiso.org) Download it and give it a try. I'll bet you never go back!

Yeah I do have it. Sorry I didn't reply to this topic, I went ahead and managed to install FC1. Anyways my problem now is that it boots straight into FC1. I'm wondering how do I access XP and then create a dual boot system?

See my other thread here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=91790

Thanks in advance

this took me a while my self, what u need to do is downlaod the the boot.iso and burn it form the /boot directory and burn it on a cd the copy the whole /9.0 directory to your hardrive. use the cd to boot and do the regular install, but when it asks you to insert the cd select back and choose harddive install

*this can aloso be done over a netwok

I'm trying to install SuSE 9.0 on my Presario 2100 notebook and I can't get the damn network module to install, none of them seem to work.

Any suggestions?
