Trying to dual boot Win XP and FC1?

Hi,

I'm a newbie to Linux first of all. Anyways, I have Fedora on 3 discs and I want to install it (and have a dual boot system) on a computer that already has Win XP installed

I can't re-install XP. I was advised therefore that I needed to use Partition Magic to change my Windows partition to a gigabyte and then let FC1 take up the rest of the space.

Basically, I'm just looking for confirmation that re-partitioning my Win XP drive with Partition Magic and then installing FC1 is the best option? I have heard it is risky, though if there is no other option, I guess I have no choice.

Assuming I can re-partition Win XP successfully with Partition Magic, do I just then "boot from CD" with the first FC1 disc in place and follow instructions?

Thanks for your time!!

im pretty sure that thats what you should do, but you'll need to leave more than a gig to windows. im not 100%, so wait for confirmation before acting on my word.

How big is your HD? You should give XP much more than only 1GB of space. After using partition magic, then yes, insert the FC disks and you're off.

You didn't say how big your hard drive is. You can make a parition as big as FC1 needs. I never heard of using all your space except for 1 gig for Fedora core. Besides, as was already mentioned, XP needs more than that. Find out how much total space Fedora needs to set up. Add a few gigs for expansion and a swap file. Create a partition of unallocated space to that size with PM, and Fedora will find it and install itself there. It should be as easy as that. If you have 10 gigs of free space, that should be plenty for Fedora.

I have an 80 gig hard drive with around 74 gig free. I thought a gig for XP was a bit small but I was advised by someone to make that size.

Anyways, what size should I make the Xp partition? 5 gigs? More? Like I said, I've loads of room. And as well, how big should I make the unallocated partition that I want FC1 to pick up and install itself on?

Thanks again for the help!

Thanks for the reply.

How do I have seperate document and game partitions when they are essentially part of XP? Sorry, like I said, I'm a rookie and I haven't yet used PM - maybe it will have options for all of this and my option will be there?

PM is real easy to use and I recommend it to all. All you have to do is right click on your drive inside the app and tell it to resize. It takes you through a wizard, you hit apply, it reboots (sometimes) and goes to work. Easy as pie.

I have seperate document and game partitions for all of my documents I write for school and such and a seperate game partition to hold all my game files and save games. If you don't play games you dont really need the games partition but I highly recommend the documents partition (mine is 3GB and I've only used 400MB lol) but if you ever have to reformat or your OS is shot, all your important files and documents will be saved on your documents partition.

PM 8.0 has an easy wizard for installing a new OS which I decided to follow. I then installed FC1 successfully. However, it now boots directly to FC1 and I can't find any way of getting into XP. I was getting a little anxious but I found "Hardware Manager" in FC1 and there's a 14gig. NTFS partition still on my drive that sounds about right for XP.

So my question is how do I access it? And, the bigger question, how do I create a dual boot system?

Thanks a lot!!

You can use PM to boot either OS, but since you haven't done much with FC1, start over again...

Put your XP disk in and repair your MBR, "master boot record", it will then only boot to XP again... Then reinstall FC1 and everything should work out OK. Sometimes you overlook stuff on the initial install, isn't fun!!!

When I install FC1 for the second time, what will I do differently though? In fact, I don't think it will be possible to re-load the XP master boot record. I don't have the disc I used to install XP nereby. I could probably try and borrow an OEM backup XP disc or something from a friend, but it could be complicated.

Can I install PM in FC1 and use that to open XP? Even better, can I use the PM installation in either FC1 or XP to make this dual boot system? I'm just looking for other options because unfortunately I don't think I will be able to obtain an XP disc easily.

Thanks for the help so far.

hmmmmm. You can try PM, but it's a gamble, it'll either work or it won't. I would get XP and burn that puppy, so you have it.... It's the easiest route.

nothing, now that the partition is there it will do everything for you, you'll select upgrade or even new instal, you probably won't even have to tell it where to install...

Download a program online called Delpart..run it..remove the NTFS partition and then install XP with the unallocted space.

If you let your linux partition have most of the space and a small percentage went to XP, then you will need to use a third party boot manager to redistribute the space or you can start over by saving all of your important files and using a program called zerofill to destroy everything and start over.

You really, don't need a third party boot loader...Then you'll have the 3rd party, plus grub on there. Not a real neat install, but it will work. You didn't mess anything up, take the extra step and repair windows, Fedora will handle the rest. No Prob....

Kinda hard to repair windows if he doesn't have the CD and can't boot into the OS.

Xp has a boot loader built into it, you'll need to change the boot.ini file. Right click on my computer, properties, advanced tab, click on the button for start up and recovery settings, then click the edit button in the new window. I'm not exactly sure what you need to put into that boot.ini file. Hopefully someone else will know.

Yes, if he doesnt have the CD what is the point of repairing? If he did have the CD, he could repair the MBR and then he would be all set.

Get yourself a boot manager.

Boot manager is a temporary fix sure, but something like that would kill me. First it boots to the manager, select linux to boot, then it boots to grub, then select linux again....Been there, done it, it drove me crazy. Be patient and do it the right way.

If he can boot into linux why doesn't he just edit the grub boot file and put windows in it? I had to do that with mandrake and it worked, I don't remember how tho.

All I can find online is that I should download a program called Grub but I can't figure out to run/download it. Considering I have no XP cd, what is the best way to set up a dual boot system with a nice menu seeing as the OS's are now both installed?

No I can't get XP. This whole thing is kind of frustrating because I've read loads of these tutorials but nearly all of them are for two HDD's. I'm just not sure how to run this GRUB program, which some people say will fix my problem.

Just as an update, I went into a chatroom and got a little bit of info. Turns out I do have a boot menu with Grub, but the only OS available is Fedora. I can edit the grub.conf file with a text editor but what do I have to code in to add XP to the menu considering that I found out an NTFS partition (aka XP) has been found at /deb/hdb1?

Thanks, JTH!
