I am running Redhat Linux on a little 300 Mhz AMD box. Redhat seems to pretty much run like a dog on this limited clockspeed. The machine runs Win 98 pretty well though. Are there any Linux systems out there that are similar to 98 in size and complexity? Reccomendations??

Well which version of redhat do you have installed? if you are running redhat 9 with all "bells and whistles" like kde graphical desktop and so installed it will be quite slow yes. if you are using kde or gnome at the moment maybe try blackbox, icewm, windowmaker, , or one of the other lighter desktops.
How much ram and what videocard do you have installed on this system ? less than 128 mb ram will slow down things too. what is the size of the swap space?

Running KDE with all the bells and whistles. I am new to Linux, so I'm not sure how to go about changing all this. Vid card is an old Riva 2 about 8 MB. RAM is 128 MB, but half is fast page RAM and half is SDRAM. Swap file is large.

Well for starters in the kde configuration panel you can disable alll kinds of animations and graphics and so on , which hog up recources.
Next, the standard browser, office suite, .... are more meant towards newer systems. there are lots of "light weight programs" that you can use instead. i go to www.linuxjunior.com for these kind of problems. They are a lot smaller than the PC Mech forums , but they've always been helpful. I use mandrake personally, because a lot more software is on the disks. you can choose to install windowmaker, icewm, blackbox, ... and a lot more software for older systems on the mandrake cd's. btw, more ram would not hurt as linux systems load a lot into ram. hope this can help |

Thanks for your help Grasshopperbe. I have tried to install more RAM, unfortunately on that ancient machine, that's the max. I also have Mandrake, just haven't tried it yet. Thanks again for the suggestions.

the min requirements for ted hat ver, 9.0 is your problem.
you do not have the required hardware to run that version very good try a lesser version like ver.7.1 as it will run good on that system. |

Switched to TurboLinux. Massive improvement. I like TL much better anyway.
