Most distros will work on less than 400 mhz. I am running Mandrake 9.2 and KDE, on the system in my sig. It runs perfect. HTH

I put Mandrake 9.2 on a Pentium II and it works fine. Slow, but fine.

How much ram? 400MHz will work OK but limited ram is more of a problem with linux. I'm running mandrake 9.2 on my laptop, 333MHz, 128MB ram and it works fine with kde but slightly slugish.

No problems here, with 256 mb ram. I usually use 120 mb steady with KDE, not near as much with GNOME. Starting Open Office jumps it up to 180s. I would recommend having 256. Like i said, it runs perfect for me.

Red Hat 7.3 ran great on my old dell opti plex. It is a pentium II 400, with 128 meg ram, onboard video and ethernet. It ran like it was made for it really. Just as fast as windoze 98. Fun really!!!

Not entirely sure about the distro or ram. All i know is the school is goin to help whoever goes set it up and teach us a few things aswell about it. I have been wanting to learn abit about linux. So i figure its a good chance to do that. if it give me minor problems i wont mind them. Thanx a bunch.

Just for the sake of roundness:
Box #1 - AMD k6-2 300 with 128megs of ram 2x60gb HDDs Box #2 - P166 with 128 megs of ram and a 3.2gb drive Box #3 - P100 with 32 megs of ram and a 1.6gb drive My other 2 boxes are a P3-800 and a P3-500, but are outside the 400mhz limit to your question. Regards, Michael P.S. All these boxes are running Slack |

Find out what flavor they are planning to run and check that flavors web page for minium requirements. I am not sure about the newer "commercial" brands, but Linux is designed to work with minium ram. In fact it is not the older systems that cause problems for many Linux flavors, it is the newer ones.
Just checked the Debian site. For Intel based systems Debian is made to run on any x86 and up arhcitecture. you need 12mb of memory and a minium of 110mb of hard disk space. For a complete install of everything, 2gigs of HD. Last edited by Karnevil9; 04-26-2004 at 01:36 AM. |
