Linux. Starting out.

Well, I've heard very good things about linux..I heard there is a program you can download, make a boot CD, and run it over your windows to get the feel for linux. Where do I download this?

I heard it's like a windows-based enviroment..but yeah, I'd like to try out linux.

What do I do?

Correct, download KNOPPIX, create a CD out of the image, and boot from the CD.

What CD burning software do you use?

In Nero, go to File >Open, open the ISO file and burn it to a CD.

Just make sure you open the image and burn it, and not burn the file to a CD.

After that, reboot your computer, set the BIOS to boot from your CD-ROM drive, and put KNOPPIX in the drive.

Open Nero, close the wizard, and click the File menu, then click on "Burn Image...", select the "KNOPPIX_Vxxx.iso" file you've downloaded, put a 700MB blank CD in the drive, and burn it.

Next, reboot the computer, and enter BIOS setup, and set the first boot device to your CD-ROM, put the KNOPPIX CD in the drive, save the settings and exit.

KNOPPIX should boot, detect hardware, and be ready to use it.

Good luck.

Just shut down like you would in windows, and take out the cd. Everything will be back to normal.
