Configuring linux

Hi,
I've been using libranet for a bit, but wanted to get my hands a bit dirtyer with slackware or something like it. Libranet has the xadminmenu, to set up sound, graphics, printers, internet and so on. I would like to know what the command based equivalents of these configurations are. For example, if I want to change my resolution, do I just type in xf86config, and follow directions? What about Alsa for sound, cups for printers and samba to see windows files?

Thank you
Dswissmiss

no its not that simple, you should eather print out the user manual or buy a good book on linux to learn all about confiqureing it, it is all done in the command line interface without any instructions or guidelines, one mistake there will render it unusable unless you know how to correct it.

Yes, you need a guide of some sort, check out The Linux Documentation Project for some good guides.

Judging by your other post it may be a bit late for this, but if you want to get your hands a bit dirtier, you should also consider Debian. Like Slackware, it requires more of a hands on approach to configure. Since Libranet is Debian based, the commands would essentially be the same except that instead of using xadminmenu, you would use apt-get.

Thanx for the replies...

I'm not sure if you are familiar with Xadminmenu, but for example one button says "configure x-windows" which to me seems to esentially be xf86config with nicer menus... isn't it?

thanx

I haven't used libranet enough where I had to mess with the Xadminmemu, most things set up pretty nicely at first, but I think you are correct about configure-x-windows being the equivalent of xf86configure. I also know through some reading that the xadminmenu is a strong selling point for Libranet, since it simplifies some of the commands of a Debian system. It also allows you to install the free version of Libranet and apt-get everything you need to have on your system, without having to buy the full version. Though I beleive to support a version you like, one should either purchase or donate to the product to help keep it free.

On an aside, before moving to Virginia, I used to live in Sound Beach Long Island, in Suffolk county, so Hi

I think the only thing that comes remotely close, is the pkgtool command and the "Setup" option near the bottom of the menu.

Good Luck,

Michael
