OpenBSD installation won't boot

Installed OpenBSD using FTP, but after install completes, when I reboot the BIOS can't see the MBR. fdisk shows partitions 0, 1, and 2 as 0 size, #3 shows as active for the full capacity of the drive. I have two drives in this box, /wd0 and /wd1, have tried selecting each as the boot drive.

These were both Win drives in past lives, I'm wondering if this might be part of the issue. Experience suggests a low-level format prior to installation might help, but I'm not finding a unix equivalent of the DOS "format" command. I recall years ago using debug to trigger a low level format of the old hard drives, but am pretty sure that trick vanished with the development of IDE.

Any suggestions or helpful links would be welcome here!
