removing grub
Hi,
I am having problems removing grub. After a google search I made myself a bootdisk and at the prompt typed in: fdisk /mbr, but it gave me the bad command or filename error. I have xp, but the disk is currently not with me. Is there any other way besides booting from a floppy or xp disk to remove grub, within linux maybe? thank you Dswissmiss Last edited by Dswissmiss; 04-10-2004 at 05:45 PM. |

I think your a slight bit confusing to me as to what OS in on the machine, but It looks to me like you are working on a linux box there so the XP disk is of no value there and that is why fdisk /mbr didn't work cause that is a windows command..
I do not know how to do that on linux but I do know you need to search out linux utilities to help you on your present endeavor..

I have a dual boot, XP and linux. The problem is, i'm trying to install slackware, which only seems to use lilo, after booting, I get "grub error 15" so I figure grub is still in charge of booting, but there's no info on it. (I previously had Libranet installed, which uses grub)

You just remove the Linux partition and do a repair installation of XP.
You may need to get a third party utility to remove the Linux partition..Check if the Linux program itself lets you remove the partition. |

Hi Dswissmiss,
I still can't figure out what you want to do, do you want to remove Slackware, and set Grub to boot into Windows? Or fix Grub/Lilo to show the usual boot menu? In case you want to remove Linux, you need to install a boot loader other than Grub/Lilo, Grub and Lilo need a Linux partition for their configuration files AFAIK. You can reinstall Windows boot manager using the "fixmbr" command. If you want to fix Grub/Lilo, boot using your Slackware CD into rescue mode, mount your Slackware partition to some directory and set this directory as root (using the "chroot" command), then reinstall Grub/Lilo, I've never used Slackware before, but this should be similar to installing any other software package in Slackware. Finally, edit /etc/grub.conf or /etc/lilo.conf and make sure your other OS's are in the list, if not add them. |
