Hi mq1:
My apologies for getting back to you so late. There are a variety of configuration tools in RHat and Linux, some specific to the distribution, that will let you set up a variety of options .. there are as many tools as there are services, front ends, software etc. etc... The most important thing is to realize that these are all just easier-to-use menu-ised or GUI-ised front ends to dealing with the configuration in the purest form, from parsing thru .conf files to puttering around with the source code itself. These tools though simplified, usually do not contain the level of sophistication and customization one can achieve through dealing with options at source. In addition, learning the foundation will also give you a knowledge of the NIX, not just Linux or RedHat, but will allow you to tinker with pretty much any decent POSIX OS with confidence. Having said that, here are some of the tools you can use & try.. linuxconf .. the single most commonly used configuration tool especially for [but not limited to] GUI netcfg .. specific to networks setup .. on the console of RedHat is a onestop configuration start for everything including sound, modem, services, and Xconfigurator usercfg which is being phased out by RHat cos of some bugs. kernelcfg .. kernel level startup printtool .. for printers In essence do all that you can with linuxconf, and if possible keep your linuxconf updated. In addition, I wanted to touch on a cpl of things.. (for all reading this thread too) .. if you dont mind my saying so, you'd get a lot more responses if you didnt single out a person. This forum has some wonderful contributors, who spend a lot of their time helping others (for, the list is long and I dont want to forget any1, whom we are grateful). I've noticed it on a few posts forumwide too, that ask for help from a particular source, while there are probably loads of others who can deal with it in an equivalent or better manner. I'm positive your, mq1, post wasn't in that spirit .. I just also wanted to take this opportunity to point out that I do not have all the answers, or the best methods, but there are others here who do. Keep on Linuxing, and yes your progress with this OS is great! Cheers Mo. |
