You should still be able to do all of that with Linux.

Well, I'm not sure about running UT2K4 in RH, I would doubt that you could do that, but you can definitely do the other things you mentioned.

I haven't installed UT2K4 on linux yet myself, but I beleive I read that it can be installed on linux. Well, at least it has the linux logo on the box, so I'm assuming that it can be played with linux.

If it's your first exposure to linux, I wouldn't worry about getting UT2K4, because for the first few days or even weeks you'll be spending a fair amount of time getting intimate with the OS itself.

heck I've been using linux since Mandrake 7.2, and I still get lost

good luck with Red Hat, just remember to sit back and relax while taking it for a ride
it will grow on you.

It definately grows on you, the most important thing is to just stick with it for a bit...I've been using linux exclusively for a month now, and when I boot into windows, something just doesn't seem right anymore . I've used mandrake and red hat over a year ago, but I just couldn't get anything installed which frustrated me, so I wen't back to xp for a while. I recently fished out a libranet cd I had, and finally put in the effort to get it working... just remember that there are alternatives to rpm files.

UT2004 runs fine under Linux, you just need to install drivers for your graphics card, nVidia and ATi both provide official Linux drivers on their web sites.

I find Linux great as a server OS, but I still don't think it's ready as a practical desktop OS... way too fussy about dang near everything. I run it as a file/FTP server and it does it's job there day in and day out.. but really can't be bothered with it for daily use.

The number 1 thing I find frusterating about linux is when something dosent work it often times give you know indication of why.

Other than that I like to install the lastest and greatest about yearly to check out the advancments in the GUI's and other superfical things.

I disagree with the not being ready for the desktop bit. Linux has come a long long way with that. And this is coming from a guy who isn't a big fan of GUIs in gerneral!!
I too had issues and problems with linux when I first began. I had been so frustrated, that I gave up on it serveral times! But something inside of me kept drawing me back. I just coouldn't let it rest.
Glad I didn't. Today, while I still have Windows on my computer, I use linux for 99% of my daily tasks.
I don't hate Mircosoft, but I have no intention of going back.

You can install your Unreal Tournament 2k4 on your computer, easily, tho i never done it. (dont have the game) I know the LINUX installer is on the first CD, just pop the cd into the drive, wait till it finds the drive (I know red hat 9 will find it, but if not, type this in command line "mount /mnt/cdrom" or "/dvdrom" or whatever its mounted on) then a window should pop up showing the contents of the drive, you should be able to find the installer on your own from there (look for a linux_insall.sh or something similar) When you do find it, just get into root (su, then password) cd directory into your cdrom drive, and type this "./" . Im not to sure what the acual run file is is, Im going to buy the game in a couple of weeks (need to get money) but if you need more help installing whatnot, give me a pm. Be more then glad to help out whoever is in need of linux help.

I'm proud of Unreal tornament 2k4 (and most games by the company) have linux support, I seeing as microsoft generally threatens to withhold services and support to companies who aknowledge linux. Microsoft is terrified of the open-source model because they cannot possibly compete with it. Windows versions are released every 2 years to meet a marketing time table... regardless of what new technology has emerged or how refined the program is. Patches for security vulnerabilities and major flaws are relased before the product is most of the time. When you have a monopoly, you can release buggy applications at jacked up prices because theres no alternative to out preform. Microsoft can no longer reap unjustified billions of dollars from licensing to schools, business, governments, and home users if there desktop monopoly is broken so its microsofts propaganda that slows desktop use. Computing doens't have to be as god awful as microsoft tells everyone, and linux is proof.

If you were trying to use a game that didn't have linux native support Wine and WineX are projects that can run a lot of windows native applications under linux. MP3's and digital camera pictures are no problem, i recommend the GIMP for any graphics editing, best tool i've used.

To answer your question of what can linux do... everything you can think of. As the community of users grow so does the capability of the OS.

You might find some trouble with wifi with certain cards, as its fairly new technology and less popular brands may not have drivers included in RH 9 but they are usually not hard to find.
