Making Linux from scratch

I want to make linux from scatch, using the LFS documentation. The only problem I have found so far is it says you need a host system, then put all the sources on a CD on work on them. The problem is getting a host system. I would simply use a boot CD like Core, but if I'm not mistaken using Linux from a CD locks the CD-drive, so I wouldn't be able to load the source on the second CD. Could I use a floppy distro of Linux as a host for LFS? Or should I simply install a second CD-ROM temporairly?

TIA, L J

Have you tried this site for the info?

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/lfs/html/

Was going to try this myself awhile back, but I thought you installed LFS onto your computer first and then built the system up from there.

Well, I could be wrong but it appears I either have to have a second hard-drive, or Live CD distro, or jump through hurdles to get LFS working with just one hard-drive and one CD-ROM. So in the end I think I'll just attach another hard-drive.

Thanks, L J

Look into gentoo:
www.gentoo.org

You don't have to have a host system for this one.
