Linux No Work! Thog Brain Go Boom!

Ok, I installed Red Hat Linux 9 on my computer. No matter what I have tried, I cannot get an internet connection. I am using a connection built into the motherboard. The motherboard is a A-Bit NF7-S.

Another problem is my graphics card, ATI Radeon 9000, causes problems with Linux. I cannot adjust the screen resolution. I found a patch, but I tried installing it 3 times and nothing happened.

Can anyone help or direct me to anything that could help?

and if it helps, it was installed on a computer that had Windows XP Home Edition on it, but on a different HD. I have two, Linux on one, Windows on another.

Well for one the NForce chipset is VERY VERY buggy, I never had it, because of the problems I've heard about it having. I sudgest you go to nVidias (or your board manufacturerers) website like so many other ppl have, and download the Nforce patch. (i guess I can search for the drivers for your motherboard if I have time, and Ill give you the link) Then you should be able to use your onboard perepherals, as like your Onboard LAN. Till then use a Network card since there cheaper and better (in my opinion) As for the Radeon 9000, I have RedHat Linux 9, just like you and I got my radeon working just fine, by using the ATI propietary drivers from there site http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/l...7&submit=GO%21
Download the XFree86 4.3 version, and install it by first entering root ( su then password ) then "cd" to wherever you downloaded the file, ( ie. # cd /home/usr/downloads/ ) then execute the file using an "rpm -Uvh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.7.6.i386.rpm", It should say some sort of error at first (some where along the lines of CANNOT FIND AIT MODULE, YOUR XSEVER WILL RUN 2d ONLY, and so forth, ignore this) then when it is fully done, run "fglrxconfig" it should bring a menu up, just put in the default information (just press enter in other words), except where you have to specify you monitors Sync rate and refresh rate , and also whenl you get to a point where it says enable "agpgart" module say no there. after you are done restart x by loging out and loging back in, run "glxgears" from your terminal and you should get around, i dont know 800-1500fps, depending on your rig, ( I go around 2100 fps in glxgears with my radeon 9600 with celeron 2.0Ghz) NOTE: Do no try and change your video mode to 16 bit it will crash, as because ATI drivers for linux dont support it. If need more info, reply back! :-)

ive tried downloading the drivers, but when they install, they dont do anything

Please specify more on what you do when you install them? do you do a --force when you tryed to install it, did you run "fglrxconfig"? ONE THING that ppl have problems with ( expecialy me) is that they forgot to install the development (otehr words the source code for the kernel) which makes it so that the driver cant find the ATI module to install the drivers under, to see if you have the source code just go into your "/usr/src" thorough terminal, or through a file manager, and see if thers a linux kernel 2.4.20-8 or something.

O wait I think I see you problem, when you had to specify your screen resolutions for your monitor under "fglrxconfig" , what resolutins, did you specify? you should try number 3, as I dont have my linux computer in front of, and I know that supports 1024x768 resolution.

NOTE try not to use the video drivers for the ATI based cards, that come with RedHat Linux (or for any other linux distrobution for that matter) since they flat suk and are extremely buggy.

After you install the ATI drivers do an "fglrxconfig" then follow the questions it asks, and when it says PLEASE SPECIFY your monitors rates and resolution and so forth, make it at adecent resolution (number 3 should be fine) anything higher then your monitors refresh rates and or resolution will crash, and is not fun to get back on. Anyway, when you reach where it says, "do you want to enable agpgart" or someting say no.

here give me the full error, so I can give u a better answer, the ATI drivers are an Itch to install, I got a load of errors before I finaly got my drivers to work.

Besides the drivers themselves are not good at all, because of ATI's lack of support for linux, so your not going to have a happy time getting it to work.

ok, i got past the no screens part, but when I try to run glxgears, it says its null ill go and copy down the exact errors

ok, the error messages i got were:

#1 - logging in

(WW) fglrx: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:0)
(EE) No devices detected
Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found

#2 - Running glxgears

Error:Couldn't open display (null)

those are what they said. the first one had some stuff about contacting for a bug report.

k so i will, (strange how u couldnt get that radeon to work, it shouldnt be no different then mine, maybe NForce?)
