gonna try maybe?

my grandson has downloaded MANDRAKE for me to try (he has dsl and i'm on dialup) i plan putting it on my spare computer,i have w2k on it but nothing i need to save so i don't plan to dual load just install MANDRAKE.
my question , is there any tricks i need to study before beginning? which is the best place to go (other than here) for linux information about setting it up? the computer is an AMD 1.4tb,256 ddr pc2100 ,it is stable and all good reliable components. i just want to try something new.

A good linux only forum is www.justlinux.com - there's lots of stuff there for you to look at.

What kinda modem you have? As long as your modem is supported everything else should be fine.

Follow the instructions, read the READMEs, and put any error messages into Google, that's all there is to it .

One of the many distrobutions of Linux. It's pretty popular, especially for people, like myself, who are used to Windows, but want to try out Linux, or begin switching to it full time.

Here's Mandrake's home page.

Since you have a while before you get to try out Mandrake, you can use the time to read about Mandrake and Linux in general. Along with the websites mentioned here, there is a good listing of Linux sites at the Linux Sites at the beginning of this forum. Also www.linuxquestions.org has a forum that is System specific.
Linux is not Windows so there is a learning curve involved. For instance in most Linux Systems you can not just pop in a CD or Floppy and play it, you have to use mount and unmount commands. Plus much of the language you are used to for files and folders are a bit different in Linux. If you reasd up now, you will be a little ahead of the game when you see your grandson and get the Mandrake CD.
Congrats on your 50th anniversary.

Raftero, I ran the same modem on many different Linux distros, with no problems at all.

Congrats on the 50th wedding anniversary.

Mike

Your modem should work fine..most external modems do. I think you will like what you find once you get linux up and running.

well grandson brought a copy of xandros he had downloaded. i installed it on spare comp. (wasn't hard at all) ran about a week, i wasn't smart enough i guess to use it like i wanted to, anyway couldn't find things like control panel to add remove or check hardware and a lot of other things so went back to w2k on the spare comp. with mozilla and now that my urge is satisifed i can be content with windows i guess.
