ok as most everyone I use win 98. I would rather go to Linux though. But I just can't see where I could use it. I'm not running a network. I just use my computer for photoshop, illustrator, pagemaker, and surfing the web and some games. Should I get linux or just stick with windows. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to learn linux since I am gonna major in computer information systems at college. I figured I could use the experience. Does linux support the programs that I listed above? I really just don't see how I have any use for linux at the moment. If someone could point out he reasons it would definately make me feel better about installing it. Thanks

Josh

Hi minutrice,

I am by no means a Linux guru, I barely even use it to tinker around with, so these opinions are based on my personal experience. You should switch to Linux if you are looking for a "computer challenge," that is if you like to learn new things and find out how a new OS works. Setup may or may not be difficult depending on what type of hardware you have and what distribution you use (I use Mandrake and it was relatively simple.) As for those applications, you can not run those directly in Linux, but you can use WINE (allows you run Windows programs in Linux) or you can use the Linux equivalent of those programs (like GIMP:Photoshop). Also, there are not many games for Linux and it is harder to set them up. So, I would not switch to Linux totally for gaming and surfing and the reasons you mentioned, however I would dual-boot Win98 and Linux so you can get familier with Linux, and it can help with the programming for Comp Info Systems. Hope that helps.

Hi,

If you want to take any computer courses in collage you definetly want to learn at least some Linux.

There are a bewildering array of software choices for doing the things you want in Linux. Almost all of them free for the downloading. Plus Linux is as stable as a rock, (if my kids can't take it down, then I know it's stable). There aren't many "action" games available for Linux yet, but there is work being done on that. Web browsing is as good in Linux as Windoze. There are a number of browsers to choose from ( I like Konqueror, faster than IE, Netscape and Opera).

To recommend a distro try Mandrake. It generally is considered the best Newbie Distro. I've found it easy to setup and use. The KDE desktop is very "Windows" like. Yet it is as powerful as any Linux distro. By all means set up a dual boot with Windows.

Check out some Linux sites to start learning. And then go for it!!! Soon you will join the ranks of the Penguinistas!!

ok well now the question is can the computer that I want to put it on handle it? It is a p133 72mb ram, 1.6 gig hd umm really don't know what video card, a phoebe 56k modem (win said it is made by askey)I think. and ummm a PC SB maybe 64 or something like that? It has been a long time since I have installed it. I am currently building a computer that is a p3 450 128 pc100 ram not fur sure what video card yet. not for sure on the hard drive either. umm some kind of 10/100 NIC and I'm guessing I should get a PCI HARD modem? Is there a such thing? I'm sure I'll put linux on this new pc as soon as I get all the bugs worked out. Any suggestions. I would really like to get Linux on the 133 at the moment though. How much does mandrake cost by the way. I don't have very much funds since I'm building this new computer.

Thanks
Josh

minutrice,

The P133 will be fine for Linux, enough to learn the basics and play around with the OS. All you really need for Linux is ample hdd space (1+ GB) and 64MB+ RAM. You can find a list of Mandrake supported hardware here:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3

Check to see if you components are listed. If they are then setup should be easy. You can download Mandrake 7.2 for free off the internet if you have a fast connection and a CD burner. If you don't then you can order a CD online for only $1.95 from Linux Central:

http://www.linuxcentral.com/catalog/...=MMA8RdUnCIHpo

Or you can go to your local BestBuy and pick up a copy for $29.95 that comes with a manual and extra application CDs. Hope that helps.

If you plan to migrate to Linux, keep in mind that not all modems work under linux. If you have a winmodem, It wilL NOT work. Check http://www.linmodems.org
