Question Linux/Unix Programming and Scripting

I'm eager to learn native linux programming and unix/linux scripting and I'm a little lost at where to start. I am familiar with C and C++ programming, but i learned on a borland DOS based compiler. Can anyone recommend a book or other resource that they found useful? I'd really like to participate in open source projects and fully transition to linux before bill gates builds hotels on board walk and park place...

The O'Reilly books are generally very good, the only one that I own and refer to quite a bit (being NOT a programmer ) is "learning the bash shell" which matches one of your criteria (shell scripting).

They do have a book called "Programming with GNU Software" that might meat your other criteria, it says its aimed at a knowledgable C developer who's new to Unix/Linux. That might be a good book to try out.

Thanks, I was looking at some of those at the store last night actually, there were just so many "for dummies" and "teach yourself in 24 hours" and "the ____ bible" and so on.... i wanted to know what someone actually found useful.

"Advanced Linux Programming" is a great source for native Linux programming, and it's available for free!
