Hard drive Partition

Hello all
This may sound like a strange request , But a good friend of myn is getting divorced and the Imac that her and her husband used has a lot of personal information about her on it. Her soon to be X husband will be taking the imac. I would like to just format the drive before letting him have it. Since Im more of a Windows guy I would even know what Live CD to use or if imacs even except Live CDs. Does linix work because if it did I think I could use abunto and just play around with the partition.

Thanks in advance

I'm going to assume you have a os disc, or a recovery disc.

If so, you might be able to use dban, and zero fill the hard drive and then reinstall the os.

But in all honesty, it's probably just easier for her to go through and just delete what she has on it. I doubt here is anything on there that's personal that her soon to be ex doesn't already know.

giving it back in non working condition is just another point to use as leverage against her. Having had friends go through divorce and being put in the middle of it as the computer guy my suggestion would be.

Have her back up all of her data and his data seperatly. Zero fill the hard drive and then reinstall the OS. Update everything and have it in working order and then give him the disk with his information on there. You could do one better and even put the data back on the computer for him.

Divorce is messy and painful. Adding more vengful acts just exacerbates the problem. As a friend it would be better for you to tell her that if she instists on making things worse then you cant be in the middle of it. Nothing is wrong helping her get her data but giving the computer to him in non working order is really not your place.

Since you said it is a Mac it should be fairly easy to migrate the data to where you want it. OSX is fairly user intuitive when it comes to these things. I would give you a step by step but I don't have my macbook on me right now. The help menu on OS X is very comprehensive and will give you what you need. I will look tonight and edit this post if I find some other things.
