Strange email problem, HELP!

I went over my aunts house the other day to check out a problem she has been having with her email, which turned out to be a very strange problem that I could not even come close to solving. It is as follows:

The email accounts she creates do not opperate correctly. She can receive emails, but much of the time when she sends them they do not go through. First it was an email address hosted by AT&T yahoo. She figured that it may be a problem with her internet provider, so she switched over to Time Warner cable, and switched her email to Gmail...but the problem still persists. I have noticed that emails go through to other accounts on gmail....but it can be iffy when sending to other email providers, such as hotmail. I'm really pretty good with computers, and I figured email issues were things of the past because now email is hosted on seperate servers (such as gmail at google) and therefore no individual problems like this can occur...but I was mistaken. I had her forward an "error" message to my gmail account:

-- Forwarded message ----------
From: Mail Delivery Subsystem
Date: Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 4:02 PM
Subject: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
To: (your email)

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

djm227@sbcglobal.net

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 553 553 5.3.0 ... Addressee unknown, relay=[74.125.44.29] (state 14).

Now I should let you know that the reason we received that particular email back was because that email address does not exist anymore....however, we do get a similar message back even when the email address does exist.

I forgot to mention, she is using a mac laptop, Time Warner internet, and uses both the email straight from gmail.com, but also through MacMail.

Any help solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes, she usually does. However, she's been switching back and forth from just going straight to Gmail.com and using MacMail, and the problem happens (according to her) regardless of which one she uses.

You have to check the MacMail or perhaps set it up again.

If anything ever corrupted it or it glitched she'll be having problems, gmail or hotmail, anything in fact that she managed from it whether she uses it or not.

Do you mean we should reinstall it? I am not very familiar with macs, so what would be the necessary steps to fix this?

thanks for the help

just recreate the email accounts in macmail, or go through the email account settings, and double check them. Never used Mac Mail if they use profiles like in Thunderbird your emails will remain with in the profile.
