Alternative Os for iMac G3 750
Well I managed to get a hold of an iMac G3 750 Blue(I think thats what it is anyways). What I was wondering is if anyone has ever installed and alternative Power PC compatible OS on one of these machines, and if so would you recommend me one to try. It has an older Mac Os on it(not sure which) that requires a password for whoever owned it before me. Im not much of a mac man, and have never used one honestly for more than 5 minutes. So I would just rather put an os that works that isnt a mac os since i dont want to pay for it. Any help would be appreciated guys. thanks in advance.

You can try a flavor of linux...I'm not sure if modern versions like ubuntu or mint support PowerPC anymore, though

Looks like the ubuntu community still keeps the powerpc port alive. Im going to give it a try tonight. I'll post the results of my attempt here when I'm done. |

There are several you can try out and an entire website dedicated to linux on powerpc. See:
http://penguinppc.org/mac/ and: http://penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php I believe yours would be considered a "New World" G3 Mac, 32 bit. You may also want to take a look at debain's most recent release, Lenny. Debian has a long history of supporting all sorts of exotic architectures whereas ubuntu has been on again off again in its support of ppc. Fedora and Yellow Dog are probably worth a look as well. |
