My First Mac
Well, I finally went and bought a macbook.
I'm still getting used to it, but I do want to try a triple boot with win xp, and linux mint. I found this site which describes how to install linux, and I assume win xp would be the same: http://www.junauza.com/2008/04/xubun...ro-penryn.html What I'm not sure about is how to get the triple boot since that only describes dual. Anyone do something like this? Or am I doomed to use a virtual machine? As a separate question: I tried to use acronis to make an image backup, but it wouldn't work. Is there any way that you're able to make a complete image backup to another drive incase you mess things up? I also plan on trying out some antivirus software. Will look towards either avira, avast, or avg. Not sure how bad viruses are for macs though.

Welcome to the Mac world! There are viruses for Macs, but you're definitely at lower risk of getting them than you would be on a PC. I wouldn't worry about antivirus if I were you. I know that sounds weird, but Mac users typically don't use it. If you're trying to backup your files while in OS X, you could use the Time Machine software which is built into the OS. It makes a complete image of the drive when you first run it, and then afterwards logs any changes, new saves, etc. You can also scan through it to find the copy of the paper you wrote three saves ago. I have no clue on the triple boot, but I'm sure someone's done it.

So far, I ended up using superduper to make an image backup.
Time Machine was searching for something that I don't have. SuperDuper seemed to work ok. Not ideal like acronis, but better than nothing. I found a few sites that details how to do a triple boot, so I'll give that a go and post back with the results, and what site I went off of. |

Just to keep an update.
I managed to get my triple boot working. I basically followed this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook/TripleBoot And refered to this guide for some clarification when needed: http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Trip...t_via_BootCamp Now I did run into problems not listed in those guides. I figured out it had to do with the version of my macbook. Apparently all the ubuntu series have been tested and are working with macbook versions upto 5.1 I happen to have a newer one with version 5.2 This led to an initial problem of the live cd not booting. I would get a black screen. I followed the first post here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/3623 That allowed it to boot, and thusI followed the previous mentioned guide and got it working. As of now, it's just too many things not working for my taste. I will probably leave all the partitions alone till a newer version comes out, and will try to install it again after that. As a side note, this is what would/should work with macbook version 5.1: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook5-1/Intrepid I may try some of those manual fixes to see if it works any better, but I will not be directing all my time to this. |

Tom: go to the Apple on the top right> about this mac> more info> model identifier.
Mine is 5,2 or 5.2 Jdeb: bought it brand new from microcenter. They have a $200 rebate which is the only reason i bought it. http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0305909 |

![]() I went for it, I ran your scenario by her and she said that it was a ridiculously waste of money. I said, "but honey, this would be my opportunity to master the Mac OS". She said, "I 'll give you something to practice on mastering!". OOOUch that hurt . That would solve the marble problem She said if you get that, then I am getting a maid.... hmmm 60 bones a week x 52... he that's not fair. I have the night to think about it.

Eh. I don't have a wife, so I don't worry about that.
I just had to use an excuse when other people ask me why....cause they know I don't NEED it. |
