10,000 foot operating limit

I was reading over the Macbook's tech specs (http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html) and it has a maximum operating altitude of 10,000 feet. I'm just wondering, what could happen if I were say, climbing a mountain at 10,000 and felt an uncontrollable urge to use it. Would it shut down, or would the screen crack? Would it melt in my hands? Maybe the LED lights would shatter?

At 10,000 ft, Apple programmed your computer to divide by zero, and thusly explode.

No, really, i can't even imagine.

Whatever happens, it's your fault. The spec means that Apple had UL test and approve it only to that altitude. They have to start changing components and designs to get certification over 10k. Actually, the changes begin at over 5k ft.

So that's why I couldn't bring myself to use the Macbook on the air plane..... Whew, I'd hate to have to give up OS X for linux, that was a close call!

I have used digital cameras at and above that altitude, and the battery freezes. I'd have to bet it is a battery issue for the Mac, but I have no direct experience with this on a Mac.

That being said, I may be buying a MacBook in the next few months for my travels in Asia, and Tibet is on my list.....so I guess I won't be using it in Lhasa, will I?

the 10,000 is for the hdd air pressure. an airplane is pressurized, so it doesn't matter. if your using ssd, your good

I wonder if it is something crazy like solar particles that are normally mostly filtered pretty well by our atmosphere which has an increased chance of changing a one to a zero above 10k feet. We have ECC RAM on servers for something like that don't we?
