Question ubuntu on G4 Powermac

i am trying to install ubuntu on a G4.
9 freezes and 8 asks for cdrom driver

any ideas or other os that is free and will load onto a G4
as i dont have the funds right now to purchase OS 9.2.2

Official support for PowerPC CPUs (what you have in your G4) ended with ubuntu 6.10

OS 9 has long since gone out of production. You might, however, be able to get OS X 10.5. Considering it's been more or less put out of service by 10.6, I wouldn't recommend it.
