Did you update the app and then it stopped working, or did it actually run at one time and now it doesn't?

You're badly out of date.
Go to 10.5 and update iTunes accordingly.
That older iTunes is the likely problem but it will cut down on trouble if you update the OS as well.

Edit : the problem with apps is that you may have to keep the whole system up to date depending on what you have.
The fact that everything played nice before an update doesn't mean you can use an older version unless you kept the older version of the apps (Did you?) but older versions will run into further problems (I'm still trying to keep a 2nd gen Touch going with apps).
The upshot?
A mix of old and new produces a non-opening iTunes.

Version 10 of iTunes does not run on Tiger. He needs to upgrade the OS to 10.5. He's already got the last version that supports Tiger. See this document.

S'ok. When you said 'go to 10.5' I assumed you were referring to the version of iTunes, not the OS, and that you were suggesting upgrading to Leopard as an option (specially considering that upgrading an OS isn't free and that Leopard is no longer available).

iTunes can be very frustrating and it's sometimes a hit or miss. I'm still running iTunes 9.0.3 on my Snow Leopard MBP and have no issues; but on the Windows 7 machine the store just stop working one day and I had to update the version to 10.1.2.17. (Oh, I see now, there's no 10.5 version of iTunes yet. I don't update my software religiously, so I don't keep up with the latest version number.)

Nuke Apple keeps upgrades of their OS and iTunes roughly in step.
It's not a one to one correlation (Add in developers upgrading their apps to keep pace and you have a recipe for problems if you back track to earlier versions.) but if you use Apple your committed to updates.

Edit : the current, as of a week or two ago, of iTunes is now 10.5.

Interesting, considering that one of the reason I prefer Mac OS over Windows is that it's not nagging me to update.

thanks for the help guys!

well the problem is, this computer is old, falling apart and there would be no benefit of updating my OS. So that is pretty much out of the question for me. Is there any other program I can use instead? or could i just reinstall itunes older version? It was running fine till one day it just stopped and the itunes icon just started to bounce and that was the end of my itunes

Are you trying to play content you've purchased from the iTunes store, or do you simply use iTunes to play mp3 files you've ripped yourself?
