Net connection not recieving packets, help :O
Im on vacation right now in california. I have 2 laptops. The one im on right now works fine with the internet connection, but the other one just doesnt work. The connection is cable through a linksys wireless/wired router. I am using the wired portion to connect to this computer. When I try to disconnect the wire from this computer and put it into the other one, IE will not load any website. Although, when I go into network connections, the only connection, entitled Local Area Connection, says that it is Enabled, AND my linksys router SAYS that the connection IS ON (light is on for that connection on the router). I cannot figure it out. I went into Status in Network Connections on the computer that does not work with internet and it is sending packets, although very slowly, and not receiving packets at ALL. If someone could give me any advice or anything, that would be SOO greatly appreciated. I'm so frustarted right now
![]() Edit: BTW, just remembered to say this, this computer that im on that the net is working, is using WinXP Pro (compaq laptop), the comp that isnt working is WinXP Home (toshiba laptop) if that is relevant at all. Last edited by Noldster; 06-10-2004 at 10:57 PM. |

Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 192.168.1.102: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times to milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms edit: oh and btw, on the computer that doesnt work with internet, IE sticks at Detecting Proxy Settings for like a minute that finally goes to that page that says "cannot load page" or whatnot, that default white page that gives u a bunch of nonsence solutions. everyone knows that page :O Last edited by Noldster; 06-10-2004 at 11:16 PM. |

well it looks like that parts working fine, the system is talking to the router just fine.
and the workgroup is the same also ? you want to use one laptop wired and the other laptop wireless ? both laptops at the same time or just switch from one to the other ? does the router have a built in switch with 4 ports ? |

I dunno :O you want to use one laptop wired and the other laptop wireless ? nope both laptops at the same time or just switch from one to the other ? I only need one laptop at a time, wired. (I dont care for wireless, and figure it would just be more work, so I wont even attempt it, WIRED ALL THE WAY =)) does the router have a built in switch with 4 ports ? Yes, it has 4 differnet ports to connect cat cables to other comps :O |

All he is doing is pinging himself, not the router. You have to ping the default gateway address to ping the router, which should be 192.168.1.1.
Go into Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings, and uncheck all the boxes. Open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS Try running this: http://tntmax.com/Download/Software/...XPFix.exe/view |

I think it would be a whole lot simpler if you just connect both laptops to the router with a patch cord for each one and just leave it that way.
each will be set-up with its own ip address by the router and then you can use eather one at any time you choose, rather than unplugging one and plugging the other on in, doing that only confuses things. |

try rebooting the laptop that is giving you the problem while connected to the router, to see if it will work ok then.
then ping the router 192.168.1.1 |

It didnt work, but IE now doesnt go to "Detecting Proxy Settings" anymore, it just goes straight to Finding site: www.toshiba.com (toshiba is the home page for now)
So i pinged the ip Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=150 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=150 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=150 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=150 Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times to milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms |

you do not want it to detect a proxy setting
that tells my you have a setting wrong in your connections the ping to the router is good. check the setting in the tcp/ip protocall, you want it to be set to automaticly get ip address from the dchp in the router and also dns auto |

well:
the router is good the nic is good there both communicating the only thing that is left that I can think of right now is make sure you can get to the router set up screen to prove it is all working ok. then look at all the settings in each laptop to make sure they are both set up the same in everything, something has to be differant in the one that is not working right for you. or I am tired and am missing something here. |

edit: and this is something ive noticed and cant figure out, in Network Connections, after the Local Area Connection, there is a thing called 1394 Connection, which is also under LAN or High-Speed Internet. This "1394 Connection" is on both the laptop that works with internet AND my computer at my house in wisconsin. And I know that my computer at my house in wisconsin cannot connect to the internet without the 1394 connection. so is that relevant at all? and if it is, how do i get it on one of these laptops? edit: incase i didnt make it clear in my other 'edit', i dont really know cause im SUPPPPPER tired and out-of-it. the computer that works with the internet has the 1394 but the one that doesnt doesnt work with internet, there we go :O Last edited by Noldster; 06-11-2004 at 12:59 AM. |

from the browser window, type
192.168.1.1 in the address bar and inter the user name and password you set, or if it is at the default still leave user name and type admin as the password. that should get you to the router set-up menue. if everything is working ok |
