Welcome to PCMECH Linda!

You need to assign an IP address for both computers. Give 192.168.0.1 to one and 192.168.0.2 to the other and make both systems have the subnet of 255.255.255.0

This all can be done in you right click on "My Network Places" on the desktop, hit Properties, then right click on LAN, properties, then click on TCP/IP, and hit properties and work from there

Then enable file/print sharing for both systems, make sure they are both on the SAME workgroup name but have different computer names.

This can be done by right clicking on my computer, hit properties, Network Identification, properties

Hope this helps..I have never set up a network through the use of a crossover, so maybe if I am wrong, somebody can correct me.

one of the pcs is already connected to a router (it only has one port though) so if i mess with the tcp/ip settings in my local area connection will that not mess up the settings of the router?

How is one of the PCs connected to both a router and another computer with one network card?

No problem. In that case, once you're done connecting the PCs and you want to go back to the router, all you have to do is go to the Network Properties and change the setting to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Right click on Local Area Connection and click on Properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button and you should see the IP settings.
