I am trying to help my daughter over the phone to set up her DSL connection and we are having problems.
Computer Info Windows XP Dell w/p4 Network Card : Intell Pro/100 VE Dsl provider is SBC Router: Etherfast Cable Dsl Router Link since three others will share the DSL line For testing purposes only I also have a single user Modem: 2 wire DSL to use in place of the router just to test a single computer hook up and connection to internet. The previous network connection on this computer for high speed access was in a college dorm. Computer has been relocated to Apartment shared with other computer users. A connecton can not be established, primary error message is that computer is not attached to the network or another is no remote access? The control pane under, network connections screen reflects that--- connection is Local LAN or high speed internet, enabled. I had the norton firewall disabled. I have tried setting up new connection through XP wizard selecting broadband always on, click on finish and nothing happens, no new connection appears on the network connection screen. Error message trying to connect is that ethernet cable not plugged in???, All cables and hardware have been checked and are securely connected. Another message has been Remote does not respond???? SBC can ping the address and verifies the signal. SBC walked through setting up new connection as PPPe selection, inputing broadband user name etc.. broadband appears on network connection screen but Error message is hardware not setup or not connected. Not sure on what to try next?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have a 2wire modem and router you will have issues.
2wire DSL modems have built in routers. Which model is the 2wire? Get me the model number. Assuming it is one that i am used to working with in your IE, see if you can access the 2wire direct. Have it on ethernet direct to the PC open IE and try to surf to http://172.16.0.1 over on the left side, look for incoming speeds up and down and post back and let me know what they are listed as. If they are Zero, or a set of dashes then you don't have sync. Assuming that is good, on the Right side scroll down and find setup and run though, it will ask for keycode (provided by the ISP) put in the user name and password, some ISPs require the username in the form of an email address. Give it the Time zone and try to connect. Let me know what error you get if any. Let me know if you can't surf into the http://172.16.0.1, if you can't access that address then there is another issue. if that is the case post back, I will be at work today but I will try to watch this thread for you.
