Modem problem
Hi,
I built my first computer recently. Kingwin 424 case with Thermaltake Butterfly 480 W power supply, Gigabyte GA-8KNXP motherboard, Intel P4/3.0C GHz, Kingston 2X 521MB DDR400 PC 3200 memory, 2 Samsung SP1614C 160GB SATA hard drives in RAID 0, ARTEC CDRW 52X32X52, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128M (OEM) graphic card, Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card and Windows XP Pro. After some initial problems with loading OS it has been stable. I installed TRENDnet modem TFM-PCIV92I (Intel chip set) and installed the drivers and set up Earthlink dial in connection but I am unable to connect to the remote Earthlink server( which I can connect with my older computer). I get a message error 678 : Remote computer did not respond. I even tried to install AOL, but again when the program could not access local dial in numbers. I got a driver from Trendnet website and reinstalled, changed Modem to another PCI slot but no luck. I queried the modem uner windows and it was working fine. I was able to make a regular phone call via the modem. I called earthlink and set up the internet connection manually but still unable to access their server. When I try, modem dials and then cuts off. Is it a defective modem? I did not want to try and installing this PCI modem in my older computer, that has an ISA modem for fear of messing that functioning modem. Any suggestions? |

Sounds like you need to get the proper modem drivers for XP. Look here.

Have you installed all the motherboard drivers?
It could possibly be a defective modem - for $12 you aren't exactly getting a top quality piece of hardware. |

Yes, I agree it is inexpensive but I intend to get cable or DSL soon and did not want to spend too much. I finally got it working after I got the latest driver for the modem chipset from Intel web site. The one I down loaded fron TRENDnet and on the CD that came with the modem did not work. It is working fine. Thank oyu very much for your help.
