DSL/Linksys USB 2.0 Adapter/XP Issue
Previously I had this setup:
Computer: Sony PCG-F80 VAIO laptop OS: Windows 98SE DSL Modem: VisionNet E200ER ADSL Modem connected via Compact USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter to one of two USB ports on rear of laptop Driver Info for Linksys adapter: 12/17/2002 v. 1.0.0.4 NOTE: My LAN light indicator on the adapter and the modem stayed a solid green the whole time. I experienced no problems with this configuration. The system was stable and everything was working perfectly. Here's the proverbial BUT: I reformatted my hard drive to do a clean install/upgrade to Windows XP Professional. The very first (and only) thing I installed after XP was the Linksys driver. That's when the problems started. My LAN light on the modem/adapter started blinking really fast. XP became unstable and a pop-up box would come up shortly after booting saying there was an error with lsass.exe and the system was going to shutdown automatically in 45 seconds. I would also get error messages reference remote call procedures. Sorry I didn't copy down the exact error messages. I tried to use a PCMICA USB 2.0 card to hook up my modem instead of the built-in USB ports on the back of the laptop. The USB port on the back of my laptop is not USB 2.0. I was thinking there was a problem using a high-speed (USB 2.0) device on the slower USB ports on the back of the laptop. I did get a solid green LAN light but I couldn't get my internet connection to recognize that the PCMICA card hookup was where it needed to go. I tried the Network Wizard and every manual configuration I could think of but never could connect to the internet. Finally, I tried the USB ports on the back of the laptop again after reinstalling XP for like the 5th time. I'm still getting a rapidly flashing LAN light, the connection seems slower, but the system is stable. Still, something is not right...the LAN light shouldn't be flashing like that, right? It never did before with Windows 98SE... The USB controller built into my laptop's mobo is an Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller (Microsoft 7/1/2001 v. 5.1.2600.1106 driver). I looked on Intel's website for an updated driver but they referred my to Microsoft. Could find any updates over at their site. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance... |

I wouls suggest that maybe the xp you have installed may not have akk the correct drivers for the hardware that is on the motherboard in that laptop and that you might want to check the sony web sight for any and all xp drivers for that model,
this is the only thing I can think of that might cause your problems. |

I couldn't find updated drivers on Sony's website. I check on Intel's website for updated drivers for the USB controller it directs me to Microsoft's website...but I'm unable to find anything there either that would help. Do you know were I can find updated drivers (newer than the current: Microsoft 7/1/2001 v. 5.1.2600.1106 driver)?

Use the Ethernet port on the laptop instead of a USB adapter - if you don't have an Ethernet port, get a PCMCIA Ethernet card. USB networking is bogus.

Yes, but the way I read it, he has reinstalled XP since and it's no longer shutting itself down.
