would it be better to build a server or buy a dell one because i need a basic server for network and file storege and where can you buy dual cpu mobo's

If the server will be used for anything other than personal use, I would go with a Dell because of the support which I heard is good for their server line. Otherwise, you can find dual-CPU boards over at Newegg.

If you need basic you don't need dual CPU's, go with more RAM instead.

If you just need a basic fileserver, any workstation will do that job fine. Just toss more ram in it than you would normally use and go with SATA or SCSI for your hard drives and make sure it has a quality power supply. You only need multiple processors and stuff like that when you are running application servers or serving big networks.

I have a customer with 20 workstations all running off an old P2-350 box with 256 ram and a 10K rpm SCSI hard drive with NT4. Network performance is not too bad, it's strictly a fileserver.

If you do want dual processors then you must be mad! For the UK look at http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=60083 for a dual processor board, then two Xeons http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=47069 (they are just the cheap ones.) Plus the RAM. Anyway a P4 with Hyperthreading will do the work of two processors, just look at the people folding twice off the hyperthreading.

just get a workstation computer with more ram, even hyper-threading is probably overkill for the proc...servers need big fast hard drives (SATA in raid 0/1 or SCSI) and lots of ram, that is it...most of the time. esp. if it is just for filesharing and maybe even some streaming (media).

you might want to look at IBM too, they are a little more expensive but I have always enjoyed their customer service and they build great computers...they have a pretty good line of entry level servers if I remember right, as if you just need one there is absolutely no reason to have a 1U dual proc xeon w/ 2gigs of ram and a 2x36.7 15000rpm SATA drives, although it would be cool
