Extremely fast download (2MB/s) on dial up?
How did I get a download speed of 2MB/sec on 56K dial-up?
This really puzzled me, I was happily browsing a site for a peice of equipment I use for DJing and found a software update was available, file size 6.13MB which I was expecting to take around 3/4 hour, the download took between 3-6 seconds, so I thought that the file size was labelled wrong on the site, so I checked the size of the zip and it's 6 MB. So I downloaded again and took a screen grab, see attachment. The software works correctly and the file size is correct. It only does it from that file on the site, which i've virus checked and is OK, the speed is bog standard on other sites/other files on that site Anyone got any idea's what happened.

That's insane!
![]() What kind of dial-up do you have? I'm not quite sure how that's possible...

All i've got is an AOL standard 56K dial up account, using a standard BT phone line from my laptop. Can't figure out what caused the very rapid download speed. Even if they've got a fast server then i'm still using dialup so it should have taken approx 3/4 hour (i've downloaded previous versions of the software from the site).
Whats mad is that's faster than the fastest home broadband available in the UK as far as i know |

Maybe the file was already downloaded, prefetched so to speak.

I don't think it was prefetched, just doing a normal download. Like I said I've downloaded the updated versions of this software for ages, always just over 6MB, and it normally takes nearly an hour. Really can't get my head round this one. It should'nt prefetch because you have to do the normal, right-click and save target as to download it

I am thinking it was either precached or your browswer has a download program that auto matically follows links are pages you are viewing and downloads those in to cache during idle time incase you click there for the appearence of a faster connection.

The weird thing it that as far as i'm aware i'm not using any download software, only IE6 without any plug-ins. Anyway, tried the download again and it was back to usual speed again, see attachment
