Connection through network cable

hello,
i just got into this forum and need to familiarize myself with this system. i need some help about connecting two pc's through network cards [without hub] through a 25metre cable, now the problem is: Will it affect the connection speed as the second computer would be surfing the internet through cable internet.

Best way to connect both is with a router.

You will not notice any difference with a additional PC or two added during surfing. You might notice a slowdown on one if the other is doing a very large download.

if you mean you want to get your cable internet on both computers, then what you should do is buy a small 4 port router, plugged the internet into that, and then plug the two computers into the other side of the router.

if you just want to connect the two computers together and dont want to share internet then you can just plug them into each other (if you are usaing a crossover lan cable) if its just a regular strait trhu cable you either need to buy a crossover or get a coupler that crosses the wires then get another strait through cable or you can get a regular coupler and another short cross over cable.

thanks a real lot, i just have one onther question, to let you know i am not that much in detail about such networks because i'm still discovering things out, what is a coupler a hub? and the difference between straight through cable and a crossover lan cable?

Coupler - Not sure what you mean, but couplers I have dealt with were simply a connector to connect two cables together.

Straight thru cable is simply that. Pin1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, ect. and crossover cable revereses the transmit and receive signals. Pin 1 to pin3 and pin 2 to pin 6 http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel/ethernetcables.html

Three main ways of connectin multiple PC's to a network.

Hub - Broadcast data to all connected divices. can cause collision errors and retransmission. Each connected device needs it's own unique IP address. Can be costly to connect multiple PC's to internet as ISP's usually charge extra for additional IP addresses.

Switch - Sends data to each connected device based upon IP address. Avoids collision errors, but still requires unique IP address for each connected device.

Router - Sends data to each connected device based upon IP address assigned by the router. Only requires 1 IP address from your ISP and can handle up to 255 devices.
