How do I give permission to access my folders on other PCs on my home network?

I have three networked PCs at home. I had them networked together and working fine.

I have a broadband modem and router.

I also have Zone Alarm Pro on two of the three PCs. On the third I just installed a trial version of Trend Micro's Internet Security. I can't access any files on other PCs.

I just set up an Owner password on one PC. I also just installed .NET framework on one PC so I can use a TV Tuner program called SageTV.

The drives are set up to share files, but when I try to open the folders, I get a "check with the System Administrator to see if you have permission."

How do I set it up full access to other PCs on the network as System Administrator?

All three PCs have Windows XP Home Edition.

All the firewalls that you have running, Zone Alarm and Trend Micro are most likely the culprit. You must disable them to be able to access the other computers. This won't harm anything as your router most likely has a NAT firewall between your computers and the internet, which in most cases is better then the software firewalls anyway.

Try shutting down the firewalls, and see if that works.

Thanks, it worked

I shut down Trend Micro Internet Security and now I can access the other two computer's files.

How do I confirm whether my router has a working firewall?

Welcome to PCMech, cheezymonkey

You can install the netBEUI protocol to get around most firewalls for sharing files between PCs.

Put the files in the attached zip in the locations specified. Go to Start > connect to > show all connections. Right click on your internet connection and click "Properties". Click install > select "protocol" > hit "add" > select the line that has "netBEUI" in it and hit OK.

You should be all set, then.

Go to http://www.grc.com/ and run the Shields Up test.
