Remote Access
How does one access their computer in the workplace at home? Are there programs to do so? Basically, how do I connect to my office PC so I can access my work files from home? Thank you everyone for your time and cooperation.

XP has Remote access built into it. Also has NetMeeeting. Or you can purchase a program like PcAnywhere. BUT, the office pc "has" to have a static IP address.

What size company are we talking about and how is there firewall and security set up? We use a Terminal server that is setup to allow connections to our network from outside with the appropriate permissions. To use XP's Remote desktop you must configure the computer at work to accept connections but remember if you can get in easily so can someone else.

If you can justify paying a monthly fee for a service, GoToMyPC is an excellent way to do it because it does not require any ports to be opened/forwarded in a firewall, a host can run behind a NAT with no extra configuration and a remote only needs to have a web browser and an Internet connection of any type. It uses a secure website as an intermediary.

GoToMyPC would allow me to access workplace files from anywhere correct? And you are also saying that it is one of the safest ways to do it, but with a fee right? And btw thanks for all of your time.

It's the safest because you don't have to compromise any firewall security. You install software on the host. The host runs as a service, logged into the GoToMyPC website. You browse to the GoToMyPC website on the remote and log in, it uses a Java applet. It then operates just like any other remote desktop application. It's 20 bucks a month or 180 bucks a year. You can get a 30 day/60 minute free trial.

one really big thing: Don't forget to get the official OK from the IT Security folks. Nothing will drive them ape faster than unapproved access to the network.

Amen, Mbossman2. In some cases immediate termination. Contact them and request setup for VPN.
