Is there something I have to do on the 2K machine that will bypass the password thing???I would like to be able to use the modem in the old machine untill my new gets here....TIA

on the Win2k machine, setup a user. then on the shared folder you will have to add premissions.
Then when you boot the win98, you will need to log into win98 with the user name you setup on the win2k user list. that should do it for you. I have networked several win2k machines that way. I know it is not the only way to do it, but that is how I do it. Someone else may have an easier way.

The easiest way is enable the guest account on the 2K box, but that's a big security risk. Best way is as Byte described, set up a user. Also, you cannot access the default system shares (the ones with the $ in the share name), you have to create new shares.

the password on the win2k machine and 98se machine have to be the same, i believe...windows uses an ecrypted access method to verify that the password is the same a login
I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure this is the case... if these machines are not connected to the big cloud (internet) don't worry about just settin up the guest account, unless you are worried one machine is going to hack the other.... -neo |

On the Windows 2000 machine, right click on My Computer, select Manage. Go to Local Users and Groups, select Users. Right click in the user list window and add a new user. The username and password needs to be *exactly* the same as the username and password that is used to log on to the Win98 machine when it boots up. You also need to create shares on the 2000 box for 98 to be able to access them across the network - if you want to share My Documents for example, right click on it, select Sharing, and share it.

Thanks guys thats what I was looking for-BUT- the 98 machine has no log in or password, unless you mean to add a new user to the 2K machine and then make sure that I use the same to log from the 98 machine for accessing the 2K machine....GaryD

you can setup a user on win98 just like you can anyother windows machine...that user and the user on the win2k machine have to be exactly the same, same login name and same password, this will allow you to have shares on one machine and not have them open to the world.

On the 98 box, you have to go into Control Panel, Networks - and set the primary logon to Client for Microsoft Networks - not Windows Logon or Microsoft Family Logon. This will force a logon - and when it comes up on next reboot, NOTE the name that's already filled in and just hit Enter. Use THIS name in 2000's user list, leave the password blank.
