Wireless range increase
I would really like to increase the range of my wireless network, since I'm a bit far from the main router. I brought the Linksys Wireless Range Expander, but it does not work with my WEP encryption, so I'm back at square one. Is there another way I can extend the range of my wireless network (or hopefully someone here has managed to get the Range expander working with WEP)?
Wireless Devices Currently owned (all Linksys): One WRT54GS (G Router with Speedbooster) Two WMP54GS (Wireless PCI card with Speedbooster) One Wireless G Gaming Adaptor One Wireless G Range Expander (which is pretty much useless because of the WEP) |

You can purchase a Wireless Acces Point and program it wirelessly.

Will I lose anything with the speedbooster by doing that, since the Access point is not speedbooster, or does it not matter?

I saw something in an ad today for Best Buy or Circuit City that was a Wireless Range Increaser, or somethign to that effect. I am going to see if I can find a link for you.
You were tlaking about speedbooster, what is the brand of your router? **Edit I found that speedbooster is Linksys. Here is a link: http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=38&prid=629 I am not sure if that will effect speedbooster or not, but if you contact Linksys through e-mail, they can probably tell you. I am guessing that since everything is Linksys, it would not affect anything but you can't be sure. Last edited by icallmedan; 08-08-2004 at 08:35 PM. |

That link is the range expander I was referring to. It works fine with speedbooster, but it does not work with WEP encryption, although it says it does. That's why I was looking for another alternative

I can't help you much since i don't have any experience with this product but if it says it suppourts WEP i would check all around the settings as you probably did, then read manual check for firmware updates. Also e-mail tech suppourt, or better yet find someone on this forum that has used it.

I think you might need something like this:
http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...455&pfp=SEARCH That works by replacing the existing antenna on your router with a higher gain one. That shoud increase your range considerably. Let me know what you think, I can look for something else. hope this helps

Ok buddy, here is the deal with speedbooster. It takes all 11 channels of the wireless band, and it molds them together to form a super pipeline, of sorts. If you have neighbors, you will be killing their network by using speedbooster. It is a huge nusance for areas like San Fransico, where oyu can find 30 wireless networks within a few blocks.
The deal withy our speedbooster router is that, speedbooster was not acitivated on it, right out of the box. They call it 108mgb per second. You probably are not even utililizing speedbooster as we speak. If you have neighboring networks, please do not activate the speed booster. IT not only can affect neighboring networks, but also yours, and cause it to crash spontaniously. (I required this information from techTv.) purchase this http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...&s=electronics wireless acces point, program it wirelessly from your main pc, and VOILA!. OR Purchase that nifty lookin antene, i might try something like that. If i were you, i'de go with the antene, and if that doesnt please you. Get a wireless acces point made by linksys, like the one shown above ^. |

I dont know if this would help you any, but yesterday I was watching Screen Savers on Tech TV and they had a story about how wireless lynksys routers work and how to get into them to change settings...most notably, the transmission power.
Here is a link to their online story. Apparently your model of router must match this one (uses Linux) http://www.g4techtv.com/feature.aspx?article_key=354 |

You could try a simple mod: http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/a...693454,00.html
I heard it can boost signal strenght as much as 10%
