sharing windows printer with a mac

alright, here is my setup:

i have a windows xp pro computer with an HP OfficeJet G55 printer attached to it. I have a wireless network, in which all other users are xp pro. all of these users can see the printer just fine and can print from it.

i just bought an ibook which i have had no problems networking, however i am having a hard time trying to get it to print to that shared printer. i went into Printer Setup and hit Add. I hit Windows Printing, and selected my workgroup. I found the computer that the printer is connected to, and then i chose the printer. When it asks for the printer model, the model is not listed as one of the drivers.

So i went to hp's website to download a driver. i found it, and ran the file, but the setup assisstant only allows you to connect with computers on an ip, not connected to a computer.

is there any way to add my printers model to that list so that it can see it? Thanks a bunch.

you could try the latest gimp print drivers.

alright, well, after trying gimp-print, it appears that my printer is not one of the models they wrote drivers for. any other ideas? thanks in advance

update: after reading the site a little bit more carefully, i found that while they do not have a specific driver for my printer, it has been reported that the deskjet 900 series driver works with it, so i tried that. it works, but seems to not print everything in the page (ie. doesn't print the entire border layout on the pcmech home page). this could be something mac specific and maybe even just safari, but it still prints whole word docs and Photoshop stuff, and that is what is important. thanks for the help

Craig I found a little item on newegg called a print server. It's a litte box that you connect your printer usb cable into then use cat5e cable to connect it to a router. You then have a printer with an IP address and you can use the remote printer on teh mac. I have two XP boxes and an ibook. I was trying to figure out the same probelm. You have to make sure the printer software is loaded on all the computers. Like I hade to load my lexmark x1150 cd to the mac and the xp boxes. Check it out. Print Server
