Questions on home DSL network
My family is planning on getting DSL soon and they wanted me to setup a network for them. There will be 2 desktop systems (mine and my brother's), and two laptops (parents and mine). What's the best way to go about this?
They wanted it to be wireless but they're so many security issues with that. Could I just simply hook the computers into a HUB, and the HUB to the DSL modem, then to the internet? Should it be a Router instead of a HUB? Or how would this work? This is gonna sound funny but I took a CISCO class about a year ago....but after high school let out (had the class senior year), I got caught up in other stuff in life and actually lost tracking of my networking knowledge.... ![]() Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks. Last edited by rapidarp; 08-21-2004 at 07:21 PM. |

to connect multiple PC's to the internet you'll need a router...a basic 4 porter with do the job for u.
With laptops, I'd go wireless router route, turn off SSID broadcasts, activte the MAC filters and WEP/WPA encryption and you'll be fine. |

As mbossman says, get a 4 port router with wireless capability. Run CAT5 cables where feasible and use wireless for the rest.
There's a sticky thread in this forum about proper security. |
