set up ad-hoc network
alright, i have a new thing that i am going to try, and i wanted to ask a couple of questions before i started
i want to set up an ad-hoc wireless network using ICS in windows XP pro. what i want to know, since it uses DHCP, is there a way to limit the amount of computers that can get an ip? i know on my linksys router, i can set a limit of ip's to give out. the other thing i want to know is if its possible to turn off SSID broacast with window xp ics or the software from the manufacturer. on the host side, i will be using a linksys wusb11 and on the client side, there will only be one computer: an ibook g4. i want to shut off ssid broadcast, and only allow on ip to be released so that the laptop is the only one that can get it. thanks craig

a little confused: if you have a wireless router, why do you want to set up an ad hoc wireless network?
having said that...if the set up is 2 machines, then set static IP addresses for both machines and you are done. |

i am not where my wireless router is, i have moved away from home, and i don't really want to buy a router. i am just looking for some way to secure the network more than the normal amount that windows will let you

yes, you can limit your DHCP pool by specifying the range of available addresses. you are better off tho, setting static IP's and disabling DHCP. that way you don't have to worry about any scooping up an IP address accidently.

don't get me wrong, i prefer routers as well, but i can't justify spending 70 bucks for one laptop to get wireless about two feet so i can walk around my room, or sit in my la-z-boy or walk to the kitchen. i have a router at my house and love it. i have used ics many times using a wired configuration and it has been very easy. i just want to try it before i spend the money
