Networking help?

I have a PC, a laptop, a linksys wireless router(WRT54G) and a cable internet connection. The Pc (which is running XP home) is connected to the router with a wire. The laptop (which is running 2000 pro) connects to the router wirelessly. Obviously the internet connection is plugged into the router.

Both computers have access to the internet right now. But I would like to network the two computers allow file sharing and also share a printer, which is plugged into the pc, with the laptop.

I have tried several times with different configurations but obviously had no luck. What is the easiest way to network and share the printer between the xp PC and the 2000pro laptop.

Thanks

go into control panel, printers and faxes. right click on your printer, and hit shraing. enable sharing and remember that name. make sure that the computers are on the same workgroup. when you go to the 2000 comp, hit add printer. then make sure that you hit network printer, and it will display the other computer in the network, at which point you can select the printer.

the key here is to make sure they are on the same workgroup. to do this, right click on my computer, go to properties, and then computer name. it will display a name for the comp and the workgroup. change as necessary

I have tried that but for some reason the laptop will not see the shared printer. I made sure that the printer was shared and that they were in the same workgroup. If I go into network places on the laptop it says that it says that my workgroup is not accessible or something along those lines. I don't remember exactly.

When I click "view workgroup computers" the message that comes up goes as follows :

" **** is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path not found"

Where **** is the name of my workgroup

I am trying to network two computers, one running xp home and one running xp pro. I get the same message on the xp pro machine and everything is fine on the other. Do you get the same message at both machines? Do you have the IEEE Authentication unchecked/disabled?

Thank You for all the responses. I forgot to configure zonealarm to allow the other computer to connect to the pc.

Ah yes, ZoneAlarm. It's a fine firewall, but anytime I have weird connection problems, disabling it seems the answer.

the router its self is a hardware firewall, you do not need to use a software fire wall also

Although I have a hardware firewall, it does nothing against malware that works from within the pc. That is where the software firewall comes in and adds protection for the pc. And I feel if it helps stop one attack it was worth it.
