Network cards not working in harmony

I've got two network cards in my PC, one wired, one wireless.

I have been using the wireless connection exclusively for a while with the other network connection disabled. However the wireless network is going down for a while so I need to use the wired one again. I thought this would be as simple as disabling the wireless connection and enabling the wired one but it isn't.

Basically everything looks correct - it gives a connected status and ipconfig shows the correct settings required. However there is no connection - pinging the gateway server never gets a response.

Has anyone got any suggestions why this might be happening?

Cheers

Disabling and enabling the required cards followed by restarting the PC works. The network cards don't have the same IP address so I've no idea why this is needed - surely if I wanted I could have both cards enabled at the same time???
