Wireless Router
With a combined adsl modem and wireless router, would i be able to access the internet without a server? ie: two computers set up with router at pc in family room, client in bedroom. Does pc in family room need to be turned on to give internet access to client i other room. If this is possible, could you reccomend a product that would do this (either WiFi standard)

the router acts as a "server" in this case. it takes care of translating the WAN signal over to ethernet and allows the sharing of a single IP address by multiple LAN clients.
as to a product recommendation: As your version of the FCC has different requirements than those in the USA, I am not sure if a US product will be compliant with the austrailian regulatory guidelines so specific recommendations from me could be misleading. Good manufacturers for consumer grade wireless routers are Linksys, Dlink, & SMC |

The router is a server of such - so no you dont need an extra server.
Anyway 'server' is a pretty broad term. |

Right, if you hook an external ADSL modem to the WAN port on a router, you will not need any other equipment turned on to get online (except for the computer you want to get online obviously)
If the ADSL modem is internal, than it is a bit more complicated, but in that case long story short the computer with the modem inside needs to be on. |

when connected to a router, PC's act independently of each other...so no, both PC's don't have to be on at the same time. |

There are combined DSL modems+routers+wifi AP products out there: like the http://www.dlink.com.au/Default.aspx?ArticleID=740 - DSL G604T Its always recommended you buy separate products (ie DSL modem and a router) unless you have some very specific constraints of price or space. You should generally get better support for the product for a longer time |
