newbie wired networking questions

building another computer in the house so i have 2 total in my house and want to network them and after pondering a long time gonna go wired networking cuz it seems more reliable for my situation (have comcast cable internet btw). few questions though. buying everything from newegg.com and since my new computer im building has onboard lan does that mean i don't need a network card for that computer? already have a NIC for this computer im on so im thinking im all set except for getting a router and the cabling? (correct me if im wrong) was looking at this router on newegg
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...127-013&depa=0

what do you think about that? would i have to get another NIC's for my computer because i thought its best to have the brands match? also, what wiring from newegg do i get? i need about 100ft. to be on the safe side? is this all i need to order then? thanks for helping. appreciate it.

my new computer im building has onboard lan does ->this is ALL you need regarding the nics.

The router in your post will work just fine.

You need standard CAT5, 5E, or 6 patch cables - one from the cable modem to the router (you probably already have one of these), and one for each computer, long enough to reach the router. The router will come with one short cable - probably no longer than 5 feet.

so should i just place the router near this computer? if i do this then all i need is one 100ft. cat5E cabling right? cuz if the router comes with a 5ft. cable and the router is right next to the modem i only need to buy one cat5 cabling i suppose (correct me if im wrong). so will this work then:

You got it. Order the cable at the same time as the router to save on shipping costs.

Matching nic brands is not necessary when you are talking a wired setup. I do recommend that when you are doing *wireless* it's easier if the nics match the access point.

how do i confirm that i have one of these? also, so all i really need then since both computers already NIC's in them (one with onboard) is the router and the 100ft cat 5e cable? just one of these then? thanks for helping.

If your cable modem is presently connected to your nic, that's with a CAT5 cable. Just plug that cable into the WAN port of the router instead of your nic.

right.. you have the nic's you need.. so as far as hardware goes, all you need is the router. the one you've listedis fine.

as far as cables, you need one to plug computer 'a' into the router, one to connect computer 'b' into the router and one to connect the modem into the router.

the router will come with a cable, you can use that to connect it to the modem.
if you're modem is currently plugged into your computer's nic, then you can use that cable to connect you computer to the router.

therefor, all you'll need is cabling to connect computer 'b' to the router.

only way i can wire is by having the cat5 cable ride up against the side of my house and then i will drill a hole into the wall in my bedroom to connect to my computer. are these cat5 cables alright to be outside? it wont be lose or anything just against the house.
