Cannot share files but can share Internet

2 computers connected to a router for internet access. Both can access the internet no problem. Both can connect to each other via VNC and both are XP Pro. No domain present. They can't see each other in Network Places even with XP firewall disabled and ZoneAlarm disabled. I get the message on mine that I may not have permission to access the resource. The other computer I get an old layout of my network when I had 3 computers hooked up, kinda like it didn't update even tho it clearly refreshes and shows an hour glass before showing the old setup.

The connectivity is there but how can I share my files via network places? Something must be wrong somewhere. AIW. TIA.

Cool

They have to be in same Workgroup with each having unique names. Then you have to select a drive or folder and give sharing permissions (right click > select Properties > select Sharing tab).

Yep, double-checked that they have the same workgroup and unique names. Both computers have drives shared giving permissions for everyone to view. Still nothing. Could it be something with my permissions? Both computers (really users) are in the Admin group.

Cool

Try turning off XP's firewall and see if you can see/access the drives/folders. With a router I have XP's firewall turned off and have no trouble sharing files between PC's.

I think you have to share specific folders, not just share "C", also "windows" and "program files" cannot be shared with XP.

May be true of "C" as I don't share that on either PC, but I have other drives in both PC's that I share drives as opposed to folders. I have never tried "C" as I only have the OS, SP's, updates and drivers specific for each PC residing there.

Exact error message:

"(Workgroup) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

A list of servers for this workgroup is not available."

Did you already run the setup network wizard? you might be missing some protocol that enables you share files with other computers. EG, you might need client for MS networks, etc.

you must have a spific folder shared.
right click on a folder and select share this folder, and a small hand indicating that it is shared will appear on its icon.
its not really a good idea to have a whole drive shared as the system could be altered accidently.

FOUND IT!!!!

I guess I was a little too hasty (sp?) in disabling services. So I read through the ones that I had disabled and came across "Workstation" which was enabled. In its properties it states that it depends on "Computer Browser", which for some reason (hehe my bad) was disabled. Enabled and now I can browse. Wowza, I fixed something. Thanks to all that helped with their ideas. It helped me to narrow down my problem.

Take the easy route and leave your home network install to the experts.
*** is this? Everything there is stuff I already know and I'm not going to pay someone else to install MY network.
