Slow Cable connection when using router

Im using a NetworkEverywhere NR041 Cable/DSL router. With a Motarola Surf Board 5100 Cable modem. When i hook up the modem directly to my computer i get great ping on CS and other games and programs. But with the router my ping is like 100 which is terrible compared the average 40 i get with out the router. Obviously something is wrong with the router. I tried forward ports and even setting the DMZ to my system..and it still is slow. Anyone got any ideas? Anything would help! Thanks!

If it has the latest firmware and you have power cycled it and the modem, probably not. All routers are not alike.

Shouldn't you be able to ping the modem with and without the router in between to guarantee that the router is the problem? I mean, it is probably quite a bit of work (you can usually only ping the modem when it's not connected on the cable side, and you have to reconfigure your network so that you're on the same subnet), but you'd get the satisfaction of knowing it's actually 100% delay through the router and nothing else. Like I say tho, a lot of work and it might only tell you something you sound pretty sure of.

Looks like that's already been determined.

For your next router, I'd take a somewhat more known brand. It's very possible that the cheap router uses a 486 or even 386 cpu to save costs, and while they (the manufacturer) can claim it works because you can surf and email, games suffer because of the cost cutting. This is all assuming the router has done this since you bought it.

did some checking on the company who makes you router...

while they have a range of products, they concern me as they give no indication of where they are, who they are, what makes up their product...they are really skimpy on information...there is a definite lack of independent reviews of this (or any product that they make). If you can return this I would and go with a more established brand..as GLC points out: not all routers are the same.

Network Everywhere is made by Linksys - it's their cheap offbrand.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! Yea i know it was a cheap router, and i wish i knew that the quality was cheap before i bought it....but oh well....i also wanna say that i bought a Belkin router and had the same problem with high pings in games. So i took the Belkin back and bought an offical Linksys and now have no problems with games at all :-). Thanks again guys.

Hindsight is wonderful - this proves why I stick with Linksys, D-Link, and SMC routers. Netgear fans do not need to reply - I acknowledge that they are a reputable brand but I've just had too many issues with them to use their routers - but I do use their switches.
