Serious lag
I've been trying to play good old Diablo2 on bnet but I have random, excessive lag spikes during all sorts of times in the day (and at night). I checked my speeds on dslreports...and for some reason my upload speed is like 3-5x my down speed which during times of lag...can be as sad as 33KB/s transfer rate while uploads are steady at around 1405kbps...for some reason...counterstrike doesnt lag up ever....i was suspecting that it had something to do with certain ports diablo uses...but i dont know much about networking....any ideas? suggestions? (i tried calling my provider NTC...btw dont use them ever...but waiting on the phone for 1 hour to talk to a person isnt appealing...esp. since i had to do it about 5 times during my first week at this new apt.)

Exactly how are you connected to the Internet? Cable or DSL? Direct Ethernet, direct USB, router? What operating system? What brand and model equipment? Need some details, please.

anyways...i am directly connected to the rj-45 jack in my wall and the whole building is supposed to be wired for ethernet....i dont use a router and i'm on xp pro....i never asked what the reported downspeeds and upspeeds are supposed to be...(maybe i got a bit too happy when i made them throw in the free intenet and cable for a clerical error they made)... |

What are the chances that the whole building is on DSL and not cable? If it's DSL, the bandwidth is shared which could really cause lag if the whole building is on it.

If it is a persistent issue, mention it to the management company, they may have equipment that is capable of bandwidth throttling on a port/user basis. this will limit the impact of this issue. (But also might have unexpected repercussions when you want to be the download hog) |
